PENGUIN
EGGS

Winnipeg's
Nathan have a good recipe for making fresh and original music. They take
dark, somewhat twisted lyrics, sweet melodies, great harmonies and trust
the band to keep the pot boiling. Their sound has elements of country,
bluegrass, folk and pop. Singers Keri McTighe and Shelley Marshall both
have beguiling voices which blend together effortlessly throughout this
recording. The instrumentation includes the obvious - guitar, bass, banjo
and drums augmented by great slide playing, and unexpected bursts of accordion,
tuba, Theremin and trumpet. McTighe wrote all but two of the tracks with
Marshall supplying the others. Themes include love gone bad (Bad Ideas,
Stone); regret (I Left My Station), truth and lies (Jimson Weed) and the
road (Gasoline). It's such a pleasure to hear a band willfully cooking
up something with such a unique flavour. Yes, Nathan have a good recipe
and this is outstanding fare. - By Tim Readman |
